compare the obama recovery to reagan. obama's behind by $6.9 million jobs and probably more important, it's per capita. disposable income that a lot of social scientists have found is the real key to getting re-elected and that number doesn't look too good for obama. >> you raised a number. the symbolism and how people feel about it. let's look at a cnn poll from last month. 67% of registered voters expect conditions will be good a year from now. daniel, what do you think? 31% say worse. are they right, are they wrong? >> the economy will be better, but it's a question of how much better. let's not forget obama promised if he enacted his so-called stimulus, by today, the unemployment rate would be down to 5.5%. so, something's gone wrong. if you look at the minneapolis federal reserve website, there's an interactive feature that allows you to look at all the the business cycles since world war ii. it's the worst gdp performance and jobs perform ann of any president. things are getting better, but at such an anemic rate. >

that is not a number barack obama should be crowing about. not a number mitt romney should be accusatory about. barack obama has created more jobs while in office than were lost, but mitt romney points out correctly, they are not the right quality. no, this is not morning in america. it's also not a disaster. >> ethan, jump in here. are you encouraged? >> i am. i totally agree with ali. mitt romney's been saying that we've been having x month of unemployment above 8%. he can't that anymore. on top of that, the president can say he's created over a million private sector jobs, so he has some new powerful rhetorical arrows that are in his quiver. >> when i saw this today, i thought this fits perfectly into this narrative of a country that's divided because it's a little bit good news. not a lot, and it leaves everybody with room to argue. >> symbolically, it was a victory for the white house to get that unemployment rate under 8% along with just about everybody else. i predicted that would be the key to obama winning re-election, but objectivel

not enough for barack obama to crow about. not that much for mitt romney to sink his teeth into. >> reporter: barack obama will crow about this number and already has. you know, we did see a big gain in this household survey. here's one of the problems with the number that came out. the big gain in jobs, ali, about 600,000 of those jobs were an increase in part time work. now, look, working part time is better than not having a job at all no, question about it. but try feeding your family, try paying your medical bills, try paying for all your other expenses like your mortgage with a 20 to 25 hour job. so, look. i think the american people still believe as i do, it's still a pretty miserable labor market out there. it's getting a little better but not a whole lot. >> diane swank is a chief economist. she joins us from chicago. diane let's talk about it. 7.8% unemployment rate. an improvement but we're not out of the wood yet. let's dealing with the real numbers. 1.1 million people unemployed in september. 40% of them have been

when you went head-to-head with obama in 2008, the polls said 51% obama, 38% mccain. do you think you would have done better against the obama that was debating this week? >> i think so, piers, but you know, it would sound like i am now trying to rewrite history or i would have done better. you know, i never tried to do any of that looking back and certainly not in anger or bitterness. but i think it is true that during the 2008 campaign, the president or then senator obama had no record to defend, and one of the reasons why mitt did so well in this debate was because mitt was -- i think very legitimately, attacking his record, whether it be the $90 billion in subsidies for energy or a number of the other things that he pointed -- the failure of dodd-frank, and so the president had a record to defend this time, but one, do not underestimate the president of the united states. he will come back strong. i think mitt has to be prepared for that. and also, as you mentioned, these job numbers will give him a bit or something of a bot today. >> we've got the vp debate comin

the obama campaign cash that was raised last month. september proved to be a lucrative month for the president's re-election campaign. democrats raised $181 million. that's a record. joining me live from washington, peter hamby. that's a whole lot of cash raised. very amazing. say many, and all in one month. how was it done? big donors, small donors, what? >> the campaign says 98% of this money came from people giving $250 or less. sptd was a very big month for democrats. polls show that the convention really brought home the democratic base and these numbers just reaffirm it. this is the biggest monthly total of this campaign. this is the money that the obama campaign and the democratic national committee have collected together. it means they're only about $50 million short of raising $1 billion for this whole campaign. so they're almost certainly going to outpace that in the next month. this is a big symbolic lift for the obama campaign after that really bad debate. they had the jobs numbers on friday and this today. it helps the ca
